Ascend the church's tower when the sky is clear to get an awesome view of the city. Also, do a video and time it with the church bells ringing! You will pay to ascend the tower at the gift shop on the ground floor.

Give yourself a lot of time to be inside this awesome church. It has the verticality of Gothic churches, yet is simple and bright. I can sit inside the church for an hour and let the shape and air surround me. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you might hear the mighty organ.

Keep in mind as you approach this building. Who thought to design a church in this style? Is there anywhere else on the planet with one similar? A brilliantly simple but powerful piece of architecture. Also visit the sculpture gardens next door.

go early in the day to go up in the lift to the lookout area as it is very popular as the only really 'high' place to get a view across the city etc If there is a funeral or wedding or service, it is out of bounds for tourists, so allow time in case you need to go back (which happened to me - a funeral in process).

The church was beautiful, when we went to see the inside, we were told rudely, if we were not staying for mass we were not allowed to walk into the main area of the church. It could have been said nicer and it was about 20min before the mass was going to start. Why wouldn't they want people to visit God, even if it was a quick visit? After all it was Christmas Eve.

    Beautiful and fascinating.

Beautiful and fascinating. We happened to walk in when the choir was rehearsing and they were magnificent -- as were the acoustics. We flew back through Iceland after a 3-week stay of Europe. The contrast between the ornate churches of the Old World and the understated magnificence of Hallgrimskirkja really hits you between the eyes. I loved it.
