Newton Stewart
This family-run hotel is situated in Newton Stewart, a charming Scottish town on the River Cree. With free Wi-Fi throughout and free parking on site, it is around 5 minutes’ walk from the town centre.
The edge of the beautiful Galloway Forest Park is only a few miles away, and Garlies Castle is a 10-minute drive from The Blackhorse Hotel. In the surrounding area you can visit Cairn Holy, a chambered cairn outside town.
There was no breakfast, given the price. It was very easy to go to Sainsbury's and buy some items. What an excellent base to have a look at Galloway and it was very easy to find my way around. I need to return and explore the surroundings even more.
Newton Stewart
Located at the front of the hotel, the Queen Street Bar & Restaurant is open to both the public and residents. With booth seats, it is occasionally host to live acoustic music and a live band on a Saturday evening. It features two large TVs and a pool table. With luxurious seating, the Knights restaurant serves an a la carte menu and a selection of after dinner drinks. The service was unmatched, every member of staff were helpful, efficient and friendly, they couldn't do enough for you. The restaurant menu was great - a lot of variety especially with the specials menu changing frequently too. Breakfast was also a winner, continental and a full Scottish breakfast if you wanted (you could pick as many or as less items as wanted). The hotel is more than 300 years old so it was lovely staying somewhere that holds a small amount of history.

The hotel building is stunning, beautifully decorated and the rooms very spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff were very welcoming, helpful and instantly made us feel at home. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel, both of which were good quality, well cooked and good value for money. The grounds are beautiful too, perfect for a walk around after dinner. Would highly recommend Friars Carse to anyone wanting a base from which to explore the local area and for a quiet relaxing stay in lovely surroundings.
The guest house functions more as a annexe of the Caledonian Hotel next door, with check in and breakfast both in the hotel proper. It’s great value for money, with excellent Wi-Fi and TV reception. All staff were friendly and helpful, and the self-service breakfast is great. The location is good, handy for both the town and the bypass, with some parking available at the guest house, and more at the hotel next door and free parking on-street outside.
Lovingly renovated and cared-for, family-run property in quiet, countryside location, near to the historical town of Dumfries. Room spacious and tastefully furnished, as is the guest lounge. Very good breakfast and dinner options in fabulous dining rooms. Thank you to Janice, George I and George II, for making us feel so welcome. Highly recommended.
Friendly staff, good breakfast and dinner.
Good location for beginning the NC500
Been to the thistle inn twice good value for money for overnight stop to Ireland 🇮🇪
The breakfast was passable, but there was little things, ie, the juice jugs was cracked on the pouring point, which can carry bad bacteria, so they need to be binned n differant ones used for guests. The food was hot but served on very cold plates which was not good as food went cold very quickly. I would not call it a ‘ HOTEL’ it is a guest house…..The
The people Yvonne and jim were spot on. The guest house was amazing so clean and finnished to the highest quality
Everything was just grand. Nice room. Friendly professional staff. Great dinner and super brekkie. Bags of parking. Sensible bar prices and brilliant pensioners menu. After 38 years in the hospitality industry I would rate Arden House a 10 +. Trevor Menzies
