Alfama is the oldest and one of the most typical districts of Lisbon. The best way to know it is to get lost on the narrow cobblestone alleyways, and patios linked by countless stairs going from the hill of the St. George Castle to the River Tagus, where neighbours know each other and talk door to door. There are typical groceries, patios, restaurants and taverns that fill up the streets in the summer with tables and cook sardines in the streets. Near the National Pantheon, in Campo de Santa Clara, is placed the oldest market of Lisbon, the famous Feira da Ladra. Every Tuesdays and Saturdays since sunrise to dawn the vender’s display their products in tables, tents or linens scattered on the floor, selling books, clothes, old records, shoes, photographs, and everything your mind can imagine. You are also very close to the Fado and Portuguese guitar Museum: Situated at Largo do Chafariz de Dentro. It is a place where you can have a historical visit through the most traditional Portuguese music-Fado- and famous Portuguese fado singers like Amalia Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo and Mariza.
