Punavuori district, located ca. 1km Southwest from the downtown Helsinki, is known for its neighbourhood shops, community atmosphere, and lively feeling. For many, the attraction of Punavuori is the abundance of design and fashion boutiques, restaurants and bars. A great number of the Design District shops are to be found here. The area is Helsinki's most densely inhabited district and especially popular amongst young adults and families with small children. The streetscape is diverse: old industrial buildings turned into offices and apartments and with art nouveau stone castles, neo-Renaissance houses, and functionalist building blocks all cohabiting in harmony. The district has also retained some of its old wooden housing blocks. If you wish to compare, Punavuori can be seen similar to New York’s neighborhood Brooklyn, with its cool little shops, great cafes and places to eat and the atmosphere in general is relaxed but still unique.
