Okay, traveled far and wide. Stayed in many hostels. But, La Abuelita is way, way up there for facilities, staff, value and location. I loved the design of the hostel, very fresh and modern. It's close by to local markets, restaurants, taco stands and bars, what else do you need?. Elvira and Eva, the housekeeping staff were so sweet and pleasant. They always had a smile on their face. Their work ethic was the best that I've ever seen in any hostel, 100% fact. Nayeli, the hostel manager was another gem to be working at the hostel. She was very knowledgeable and helpful about any queries that I had. She always had good music on, in and around the hostel at all times. "Heart of Glass" by Blondie will always remind me of La Abuelita from now on :) Oscar, who mainly covered the reception during the evenings from my stay, was a friendly and very welcoming amigo. He seemed genuine and was a perfect addition, to be apart of the hostel staff. Last but in no way the least, was Julio. Julio had such a positive and happy go lucky energy about him. He had great local knowledge and, similar to Nayeli was very helpful with any queries or questions that were asked of him. Julio's sense of humor kept the staff and guests moral high due to his presence, whilst I was there. He is another terrific addition to the team. La Abuelita may just be the best hostel experience that I've ever had. I genuinely mean that!. The hostel ticked all the boxes and more. It didn't meet my expectations, it exceeded them, during my visit to San Cristobal. Just book it already and enjoy your stay!.

Everything was spotlessly clean and the rooms cleaned daily. The breakfast was great, staff friendly and helpful. Nice and quiet at night to get a good sleep. Lots of drinking water available. I can see why this hostel is rated so highly

Best hostel I've stayed at, the staff is super friendly and the owner is lovely too. The beds are so cozy and the curtains give privacy. It has a beautiful terrace as well which completes the chill vibes here B)

It’s worth it to pay the extra for the breakfast at this hostel. I made friends as soon as I walked in. They offer lots of tours, which is great. I’ve been to San Chris several times and never enjoyed it until I stayed at this hostel. I will surely return next year :) I am super happy with everything. They offer free coffee and tea all day. Also offer drinking water which is wonderful for the environment. You don’t need to buy those plastic water bottles if you stay here. I had no phone data when I arrived from Guatemala and this place was super easy to find without a gps. It’s right in the main walking street. The staff was went out of their way to answer any questions I had. Even looked up the bus routes/ times to the airport for me.

Loved that there was a heater in the room and thick blankets! It was generally quiet at night and nice to have access to a kitchen. My room was very tiny; but depending on how much luggage you have this may or may not matter.

It was good to live in nature, with hummingbirds visiting every morning for breakfast. The breakfast is also really good, and different every day. Would have stayed longer if we had the time!
