Located just 3.1 km from Observatory Golf Club, The Great Gatsby Houghton provides accommodation in Johannesburg with access to a garden, barbecue facilities, as well as a shared kitchen. I travel to South Africa two to three times a year, and have done so over the course of the past 20 years. I have stayed at the top and finest hotels in Johannesburg - the best of the best, and absolutely NONE can compare to 'The Great Gatsby' in terms of hospitality, comfort, ambience, decor, luxuriousness, and individual attention. The hotel is a gracious, completely restored mansion from the early 1920's. It has been beautifully and exquisitely restored to its original Grandeur. The mansion consists of 7 luxurious suites, each decorated in an individual tasteful manner, reflecting the aura of its original time. The rooms are not only STUNNING and SPOTLESS, but filled with exquisite antique furnishings from its individual era. The home itself is a work of art, akin to a museum. The history of the mansion is extensive, and one feels the wealth, graciousness, splendour, and finesse of those from the early 1920's who walked the passages of this home. The breakfasts were STUNNING and made to order. 5 course breakfasts. On fine china, cotton linen, and antique silverware, all on a grand stunning table which dates back to the 1800's as does all of the furniture really. Comparable to the BEST breakfasts in the world. Individual service that exceeded my experiences in all the 5 star hotels throughout the world that I have stayed in. The delicious dinners resembled nothing less than works of art. The host Gina - well there are no words to describe her. She could not do enough for me. She is the most refined, cultured, kindest, and SUPERB host. She served not only as a host, but as a concierge, recommending all that there is to see and do in the area. In terms of value, this is a joke. I cannot understand how such luxury can be presented at such a low cost, even given the great exchange rate with the American Dollar. Comparable establishments charge 10 times the price. Staying at Houghton Place felt more like visiting far-away family than staying at a hotel abroad. It was absolutely marvelous: beautiful modern interior, lots of fresh air for morning yoga, delicious freshly-made breakfast, the kindest owner (thank you, Sam, I learned a lot from you) and... (an unexpected bonus~~) two cutest labradors! Getting from and to the airport felt safe and easy thanks to the meet-n-greet service offered by the Place (thank you, Siku). I can't think of a better way to start my South Africa journey~ Hope be back again some day!

Located in Houghton, The Residence is a boutique hotel that offers spacious suites with a spa bath, and a balcony overlooking the garden, the tennis court or the outdoor pool. We loved the design of this hotel. It was like Ethan Allen had had a hand in decorating the public spaces - it was so perfectly boho British Colonial. We loved the cozy bar and the lush plantings on the grounds of the hotel. Also loved the breezeway with the coy pond on the way to the bar and restaurant. Our room was very comfortable. The staff was laid back while still being professional. We have stayed in many places in South Africa that were super-duper deluxe. We liked that The Residence felt more homey and comfortable without being over the top.

The apartment was exceptionally clean and well appointed. the facilities are of a high standard and the apartment is very comfortable. We ordered a bottle of wine and a snack platter to the room for our arrival, and the staff were very accommodating of this request and organized to arrange all for us.
