This is a city which has been heavily impacted by the decline in tourism in Tunisia. Most shops and restaurants have shut down but many still serve great food such as al-Brija and Dar Abderrahman Zarrouk. There is little to do except visit the Grand Mosque, souks and maybe Kids' Land if you have children.
Taxis are incredibly cheap (1 dinar) although most places are in walking distance.
Be careful about asking locals where a place is- on two occasions we were taken an extremely long inside route where the person hoped to make us buy something from a friend's shop in order to receive a cut of the pay. Most of the time, the place you're looking for is close so maybe screenshot off Google Maps.
It gets extremely hot in kairouan so avoid it in peak summer times.
