Watarase Onsen Hotel Sasayuri, hotel in Hongu

Watarase Onsen Hotel Sasayuri offers accommodation in Hongu. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant. All rooms are fitted with a flat-screen TV with satellite channels.

We liked that this property was available when we decided at the last minute to hike the kumano kodo. The room was large and very comfortable and the various onsens were excellent. We were able to take the hotel shuttle to the start of the hike on our first day hiking from there. When we needed to organise a lunch for an early start the second day the hotel drove us to the local shop in the evening because we would be leaving too early for the hotel lunch. The dinner at the hotel was excellent (though we felt a little rushed)

Guesthouse Okagesan, hotel in Hongu

Guesthouse Okagesan is a holiday home situated in Hongu, Wakayama. There are 2 Japanese-style rooms, a living room, kitchen, bathroom and toilet in the property.

Everything about this place is great. The owner is very friendly, welcoming and helpful. We met him at his nearby yakitori restaurant (which is also amazing) and he took us to the house. Such a peaceful place as you have the entire house to yourself. There is a kotatsu for warming yourself up if its cold, lovely areas to sit inside/outside and watch the birds, lots of space, clean and comfortable bedding, and the building itself is lovely. The owner also gave us discount vouchers to an onsen a short walk away which was incredible.

Ashita no Mori, hotel in Hongu

Situated in lush nature, Ashita-no-Mori features hot spring baths, a Western restaurant and comfortable rooms boasting river views and sofas.

The place has an excellent location directly in front of a thermal river where you can soak until 10pm. The actual facility is a bit dated but it has two private onsen that you can use when they are free - this was very nice. Breakfast was ok. Would recommend if in the area.

Villa KUMANO, hotel in Hongu

Offering mountain views, Villa KUMANO is an accommodation situated in Hongu, 22 km from Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum of Art and 24 km from Kumanoshi Kiwakozan Museum.

Very happy with our stay at Villa Kumano. Hosts provided all the required information and were accommodating of some last minute requests from us too. The villa itself is huge and equipped with all comforts, including a wonderful mattress. We also enjoyed the dinner which was provided at a nearby restaurant, and the breakfast (we requested a boxed one, having to leave early, and it was packed with delicious and fresh ingredients). Highly recommend this place if you are spending one night in Hongu, even more if you are doing so after a long walk and are in need of proper rest!

Guest House Takiyoshi, hotel in Hongu

Situated in Hongu, 14 km from Hosshinmon Oji Shrine and 21 km from Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum of Art, Guest House Takiyoshi offers free WiFi and air conditioning.

Fantastic place to stay! The staff were all very welcoming and friendly. Given we had arrived after a rainy day of hiking, they provided newspaper for drying shoes for the next day which worked very well. Everything in the accomodation (bathroom, baths, bedroom, dining room) is very clean and maintained very well. The baths located in the guesthouse were very relaxing. The dinner and breakfast were incredible and very filling. The staff were also very helpful in making sure we caught the right bus the next day. There is even a lift within the building! Location is also great.

There's so much beauty and serenity in visiting this area.

There's so much beauty and serenity in visiting this area. It was relatively quiet during the early winter season but perfect hiking conditions. Food / meal areas were a little sparse and not as exciting but invigorating to experience the pilgramage walk.

It's the heart of the Kumano Kodo. There are numerous beautiful trails and trains in the area. The mountains and rivers surrounding it are fantastic. I have lived in Japan for 35 years and find this one of the nicer areas to experience beautiful Japanese Fall.

This is a beautiful part of Japan.

This is a beautiful part of Japan. We lived in Japan but had never been to this area. Full of walkers. We are not walkers but easily did a full day on the Kuman Kodo. We easily moved around by bus . They are not frequent so pay attention to the timetable Wonderful onsen baths. Lovely walks Koyasan was revelation and we regretted not staying longer We cancelled Taiji when we realised that is where they capture and slaughter dolphins

We arrived in Kuwaya Onsen from Tanabe early in the afternoon so had time to rest and visit the river. The next day we walked the Kumano Kodo trail from Ukegawa to Koguchi (13km, ca 4-5 hrs). A very beautif hike with a few climbs. Plan your trip well as there a few busses from/to Ukegawa and Koguchi. Make sure to bring enough water and a lunch as you cannot buy it on the way. Wonderful experience!

Fascinating, I had not intended to spend four days in one location when I came here. The temples are magnificent and the cultural heritage centre kept me reading for some time. A beautiful walk up the hill to an Onsen where I enjoyed the medicine bath, and caught the bus back to my Onsen. I hired a car in Shingu and travelled the coast road to the light house and the pearl diving museum and back up to Kii Tenabe and back to my Onsen. Wonderful coffee at the cafe Sei in Hongu. Enjoyed their gallery upstairs, and the glass and pottery shop. And did I mention the coffee.
