Basically Padang is for people who probably finds food hunting their choice of travel. For me, going to Padang was a gateway to Kerinci, for the mountain hike. Padang in itself did not have much sightseeing places to offer but perhaps we did not take the island tours or any waterfall visits. Overall, it's a nice small place to chill and relax.

A big city with little to no immediate tourist interest but serves as a good place to start and end travels. There is good food options but a little difficult for anyone not familar with Padang to access the information. The city have a beautiful but undeveloped waterfront. A friend who is knowledgable says the city is becoming cleaner.

Padang is My wife's hometown,, so this review might be not objective.
This town is famous with it's culture, and the roof of the houses which they call "Bagonjong".
Padang itself is nice, with a great scenery from "Bukit Barisan" mountain and "Batangarau" estuary. You can also learn about Local urban legend such as "Malin Kundang" and "Siti Nurbaya"
But other places around Padang is also noteworthy, such as Bukittingi and Padang Panjang.
The Conclusion is,, Padang is worth a visit. You should spend 1 or 2 week there in Sumatera Barat.

The people are very friendly and kind and we'll soon miss the foods.
BUT, this may not be the place for a vacation where you want to rejuvenate yourself. It's just very hot and humid, and way too crowded around the town center. Kind of disappointing too because the town is quite dirty.
Also, be careful when choosing a place to stay. A 1-star hotel is just like a run-down motel and a Syariah motel doesn't mean Smoking is prohibited.
Instead of Padang, head to Bukittinggi ... this I recommend.

Calm environment in a residential area.
The room is clean with hot water shower.
The breakfast is handmade, fresh and delicious.
Dila is an amazing host with a shining personality and her family and neighbours are welcoming.
Dila offered to pick us at the bus station (free of charge)she is disponible, helpful. She helped us during our stay to organise our transport and send one box back home and share some suggestions to visit around.
Possibility to rent a motorbike to visit Padang and around.
The place is very calm, completed with all needed amenities for offering an awesome stay. The whole Truntum Hotel team took care of us at anytime, enjoyable and respectful people ready to solve any problem we could have for making us feel supported and like at home. They made our experience to be great. Hoping we can come back soon again!
I had a wonderful experience at the Padang Homestay.
The room was clean, very comfortable and located in a quiet neighborhood.
We also booked a tour with the Homestay and Bayu is an amazing guide! He’s so knowledgeable about the region and gave us an amazing experience.
Thanks to Bayu and his family :)
The staff was so gently and friendly. It's a beautiful building where every night you can enjoy with other foreigners listening some music. The food it's so good, with local and european food options in a reasonable price. The room was so clean with a confortable bed. Amazing place where stay in Padang.
Excellent location nestled on hill, overlooking old Padang and district where Bat and Arrow is located on opposite side of river. x2 minute walk to old district via quaint rope bridge. Okta and team are legends as hosts and they help you out on what you need.
I really enjoyed my time here. The staff, Suriya and Jay, are friendly and even took me to get local Padang food (a trip highlight). The beds are big and comfy and the shared space is a good spot to chill out (plus, a fridge you can use).
Been to Padang multiple times and wanted to stay away from the town and found this place. Fadhila was great host and the place was very clean. The price I paid here compared to my earlier stays were lower.
Very bad waiters don't respect customers, and like to complicate online bookings even the deposit money is looked at being difficult to take back, it's best if a hotel like this is only 1 star class
The location of Air Manis Hillside is great: a beautifully landscaped hillside garden surrounds the buildings and the sea view is fantastic. It is located a little outside Padang in a quiet area.
Everything, the people, the owner, the staff, very friendly people, also the location, you can walk to Taplau (Padang Beach) and the cost of the stay is AWESOME. I will be coming back for sure!
First off all Rob is a great guy. His home stay probly has the best view in padang. Loved the hospatality. Loved everything about the place. Must stay here
As before, this hotel was absolutely perfect! We love Padang and the Mercure is super comfortable and the staff, as all Indonesians we met, are incredible.
