Maradona was an excellent host, his location is not far from the old town, but because of the hills it can be hard to access the old town. He would drive and drop us off at the entrance to the old town so that we didn't have to worry about our car. He was a wonderful and helpful host and the breakfast was delicious. I would highly recommend staying with him!

This hotel was absolutely amazing, mostly due to the incredible staff, particularly Anila, who was just the loveliest and kindest of persons. She and her male colleague (I forgot his name) treated us beautifully, including making sure we had something to eat and coffee before our early departure. They know how to provide excellent customer service. The location of the hotel is the best in Gjirokaster, located right in the center of the old city and close to the old house museums, the castle fortress, and the old bazaar and restaurants. You couldn’t find a more convenient location in Gjirokaster. Finally, we had the King Suite (Room 206), which was magical and made us feel like we were back in time and staying like a Pasha in the best room in the city. This hotel was absolutely superb in every way!

Oh man we loved our stay here. Driving in the area is a little tricky but the owner gave us great directions (tip - don’t follow the directions google maps gives you but follow your location on the satellite view and try to find your way based on what looks like a road). We arrived a little early but the host made up our room quickly and brought us juice, coffee and fruit as a welcome snack! They also helped us park our car in an accessible location. Breakfast in the morning was excellent and we would absolutely stay here again.

The town is beautiful and interesting for its fortified houses. Also is on UNESCO list. The old centre is very pleasant to walk around, it has an atmosphere. Car traffic was quite problematic, the roads between the houses are very narrow and very steep. Also, Google maps did not have good enough background and often led us somewhere where, for example, instead of a road was staircase. The old stone roads were very slippery in the rain ;-) Ono or two night is enought to stay here.

Albanian thoughts:
Albanian thoughts:
Spent a week here in April 2024 – so many positives …
Purely electronic passport gates at Tirana airport – an advantage if low on passport stamp space? Swift bus into town centre. Euros very widely accepted, 1:1 with the local Lek currency. Felt safe, met many great people and enjoyed a lot of raki; wine rather so-so, beer better … Trains are close to non-existent; negotiating the minibus service involves arriving and paying on the spot – found it straightforward; typical price: Tirana to Gjirokastra – 4 hours - £10 ..; saw stunning mountain scenery in last 2 hours, and when crossing the mountains from this town to Sarande port (1hr15, £3.30). Accommodation costs very favourable: enjoyed flats at £9 pppn. From Sarande, easy enough to catch a ferry or hydrofoil to Corfu, as a return airport – ca/ £20 single, 30-60 mins. Albaniatourguide proved a very useful online resource. Looking forward to next trip: apparently 12 degrees even in January …

Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.

The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it is rundown with only the bazaar and some houses being maintained to a level fit for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you go away from the bazaar especially at night it feels really lonely and sad. Gjirokaster has become very touristic in the past few years with the old bazaar being constantly crowded with youths from Western European countries who do not respect the place and openly smoke hashish and get drunk.
The road to get to the old town is a traditional stone path that while beautiful is a disaster because it destroys your car's suspension, has very steep grades and if another car comes from the other direction good luck! Because of this and the lack of parking in the old town (even among hotels that advertise having parking) you become a prisoner of the old town. During the summer because of the type of stone the city is built of (also found in the mountain Gjirokaster is built on) it is very hot even during the night making the entire experience very unpleasant.
Most museums/attractions are basic and the few English descriptions that can be found are very nationally charged which reminds me more of the rhetoric of the 1940s than 2023. The vast majority of Albanians, even those who work in this "tourism industry" cannot speak English at all or speak it very badly making communication difficult and moreover they are not really friendly with tourists.
Gjirokaster like Albania in general is about as expensive as Greece or even Italy while effectively offering a touristic product akin to a 3rd world country. Unless corruption is rooted out, Albanians stop emigrating and the economy and democratic institutions develop I frankly do not think I will ever visit Gjirokaster again.
Everything!
It's a beautiful building situated in the heart of the historic old town.
Tastefully renovated with modern equipments and classic traditional touches.
The hosts are very welcoming, friendly and willing to help with everything.
Spacious, cosy, warm room with a comfortable bed and spotlessly clean beddings and bathroom.
Breakfast is delicious, plenty and everything fresh.
Will definitely be back and I recommend this place to everyone who wants to get e real taste of Gjirokaster.
Definitely recommend!! Amazing location, super nice rooms and courtyard, very clean. Erisa and her husband run this 3-room hotel with a lot of love, they made us feel at home and gave us great recommendations for Gjirokastër and surroundings. The breakfast was really good with everything you could ask for: juice, coffee, eggs, cheese, jams, fruit, bread and local specialties.
When back in Gjirokastër, we'll definitely stay here again!
Stayed at the Superior Double room which was a fantastic authentic Ottoman style room. Irvin at the reception was exceptional and gave us a great tour of the hotel, with explanation of the city's main sites visible from the balcony on top of the hotel, as well as serving us a lovely tea which was soothing after my drive coming from Berat (passed through a rainy storm!). Hotel Kalemi definetly won on the list of nicest hotels I ever went to.
Ernest and his family were very kind hosts, ready to help us whenever needed.
The place is even better in real then shown in the pictures: very comfortable and clean room, cosy terrace in the shadow to enjoy a drink or a very tasty homemade breakfast.
As it gets hot in summer you can enjoy the small swimming pool.
The hotel is in a great location: right in the city centre and near main attractions of Gjirokastër but in a quiet street.
Hotel Kalemi is a historic hotel within walking distance of the market at Gjirokaster. The staff were very welcoming and even provided a drop to the market when they were going there. Amazing views from our Pasha room (we paid for an upgrade on check-in). When we had some issues with charges for extra coffee at breakfast, they were kind enough to waive the charges. Overall, a great stay and good choice at a covenient location.
Everything was absolutely amazing! I enjoyed my stay a lot. It's the best option where to stay in Gjirokaster. Picking up from the bus or driving you to the city, castle was huge advantage as well. Hotel homemade restaurant with delicious food for good money was super tasty! Rooms were clean, nicely furnished with all facilities you need. I can only recommended.
Absolutely everything was amazing. The room was spacious and very clean. The owner was so kind and showed true Albanian hospitality and really looked after my friend and I. It really felt like I was visiting a family member. I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone that visits Gjirokaster.
Location is in the heart of Gjirokaster. For that bonus, everything else really didnt matter. The bathroom was super clean and modern. Working wifi and many sheets available for use. Property managers were nice and the free breakfast wasn’t in the style of standard hotels, it was homemade and fresh!
Castle Hotel is beautiful and cozy. The family who owns the hotel was super nice, very helpful and we felt at home there. The place is absolutely beautiful and the view as well. We stayed two nights since one day wasn't enough in this lovely city. I highly recommend this hotel and Gjirokastër as well.
An extraordinary hospitality. As soon as we arrived in Gjirokaster, the owner of the hotel took us with his car from buss station to hotel. The hotel was very clean and very comfortable. a fantastic breakfast, we enjoyed the pancakes with honey. We will come back again. thank you for everything Kliton
Beautiful hotel on the top of the hill with view of the whole Gjirokaster, nice folk style room, really clean and well furnished, super hepful staff and perfect breakfast with plenty buffet food to choose from. Best breakfast on our Albania trip, very tasty. Parking at location direct on hotel spot.
Very nice location. I found it very near to center and castle. Hotel owner is always there for you if you need help. If you book first floor room you can see castle directly from window. This is very nice views. In my recommendation If you are coming gjirokaster this is good option for you.
The staff are very welcoming and kind. The hotel and room were clean, there was free parking in front, the water pressure in the shower was excellent, the mattress was comfortable, and as a single woman traveler I felt very safe here. There is a cafe downstairs which is nice and convenient.
Staff was smiley and very helpful at the hotel. They prepared a nice breakfast for us for the requested time which was earlier than their standard breakfast time. Staff helped to carry my luggage to the room and also helped after check-out to carry close to our car due to stone streets.
A brand new hotel with the best views of Gjirokaster! Rooms are bright and big, the bed is very comfy, breakfast is amazing and staff is very polite. I spent my 10 year wedding anniversary there and they even decorated our room. I absolutely recommend it to everyone!
We were really glad that we found this little cosy hotel, built with love. Beautiful place, quiet, clean! All the family very nice and kind. We deffinetly recommend it and if one day we go to Gjirokaster again, we will stay there.
Thank you.
The hotel had a modern look and feel with exceptional views. The owner and staff are kind and generous, giving us a tour of the hotel and being so willing to help when needed. The breakfast was filling and included many different courses.
