I had the privilege of staying at Hotel Djupavik, and it truly ranks among the most exceptional places I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. The breakfast was delightful, the warm welcome from the staff was even better, and the tour of the nearby fish oil factory was simply awe-inspiring. Hotel Djupavik is about 30 miles off Road 61 (paved) via Road 643 (unpaved) in the Westfjords. We had a four wheel drive (recommended) and found the relatively short trip to be an adventure. The road is potholed, twisty, high above the sea with no guardrails. At the highest point there is a spectacular waterfall and a breathtaking view of the fjord below. The hotel is quirky in a Wes Anderson, whimsical way. Rustic, cozy rooms, another stunning waterfall a short distance away. The owners/hosts are accommodating and friendly. Djupavik is an old fishing town in Strandir region of the Icelandic Westfjords. Beautiful waterfall above the "town", which is only about 10 houses. Old abandoned fishing factory is the main building, which now is often used for art shows. Calm, peaceful, and interesting location on a fjord in Iceland. The art exhibit in the old herring factory was interesting to view. Great place to relax and unwind. The road to Djupavik is packed down but not paved so take your time on the drive.
