Lovely little village, quiet, but with all facilities close by. Excellent base for touring the Thames Valley, Henley, Wallingford, Marlow and Abingdon are all a short drive away. You really do need a car to tour the area.
The name is a little confusing - the property is well outside the village of that name, and we had a slight difficulty in locating it - we don't use satnav. Benson itself, being an operational RAF base, is of interest to plane spotters..... The Croft itself is very pleasant - a crescent of very well to do houses about a mile and a quarter outside Nuffield village, on a quiet lane parallel to the Grims Dyke and Ridgeway. It appears to have changed its name; my 1" OS map shows it as Turners Croft. Beautiful scenery, and lovely bird song in the morning; an excellent base for exploring the lower Chilterns, Thames Valley and National Trust properties. The house is about half a mile from the Ridgeway, making it an ideal base for walkers. There's a lot to see of historic interest, not least Nuffield village's connections with Lorn Nuffield, the founder of Morris and MG Cars. We had meals at the Cherry Tree in Stoke Row, two National Trust properties and the George in Pangbourne; all good food and pleasant environs.
Learn about Matilda and Stephen's history and stay for half a day, meandering through the town, visiting Agatha Christy place. The Old Post Office is a nice place for food and drinks. And the remains of the castle good to walk around
Lovely Thames riverside and boats cruising past (even paddleboards) and quaint little town as featured in Midsummer Murders close to Oxford for day trips....also to Benson riverside coffee very pleasant
Fab location & Good shower but that’s it. Disorganised in-house, very young people on breakfast duty with no idea whether ordered food or not. Minimal facilities , small room & filthy throughout apart from breakfast & dining area. Nobody on reception on arrival or vacating hotel. Should be fabulous but lack of management was poor.
This town has something for everyone. Thames Riverside walks, steam railway, castle and connections to Agatha Christy. Start with the museum which is superbly laid out and then explore the period of history that interests you inthe town.
