The monasteries are lovely but the public transport (bus) to move around them is limited if you only want to visit one or two. Our time was limited so we took the 9am bus up to the main meteron monastery and walked down to Varlaam and Rossenou (St Barbara) convent. We were finished here by 12 but had to walk back to Kalambaka as there was no bus until 14:30 and we had a bus to catch for our onward journey. We walked down to Kastraki and had a quick bite and walked on to Kalambaka. It was an easy walk and took about 40 mins but this was in April so not too hot.

Kalabaka is a city with traditional houses and Meteora is very close. You can visit some of the monasteries. We went to the museum of physical history with animals and birds that lived there, which was very nice, to the mushroom museum and to the digital projection center of Meteora's history and culture. The food also was excellent.

The monasteries of Meteora are place of spiritual renewal.
The monasteries of Meteora are place of spiritual renewal. The Byzantine art and the historic architecture elevate the soul. I was fortunate enough to half ten minutes alone in the chapels of both the Varlaam and Holy Trinity monasteries in between the flow of tourists and found it to be peaceful and prayerful. The natural scenery of the area, including the sunsets, has no equal anywhere I have been, and watching the sun change the colors of the rocks and the monastery buildings as it set in the west was truly amazing. Kalabaka is a bit built up and a mile or two further away from the rocks. Stay in Kastraki for a really Greek village experience.

Kalambaka is an interesting small town with many restaurants, gift shops, souvenirs shops. But the main attractions are the mountaintop monasteries from the 14-15th century that seem to float as you look up.
Taking a tour is very helpful because you get the history of the area and the monasteries, and you do not have to concentrate on driving.
Don’t forget to visit the Natural History Museum and the Mushroom Museum housed together. We have such respect for mushrooms now!
The hotel is conveniently situated only a few kilometers from the "suspended in the air" monasteries atop of the spectacular rocks of Meteora.
The room had a small terrace , offering a breathtaking view of the gigantic rocks.
Inside the room, a complimentary basket of apples and a bottle of wine and mineral water in the refrigerator.
A few steps away from the hotel may be found some tavernas, offering specific Greek meals.
The breakfast had a good variation, including vegetables and fruits.
The hotel is beautiful and clean. It is a non-smoking hotel which made it even better. The staff went above and beyond, making sure we were comfortable and had all the information we needed to enjoy the Meteora. I wasn't feeling well and they offered tea and other items for the road to help me feel better. Breakfast was wonderful with so many options. By far the best hotel we stayed in while traveling through Greece.
Excellently located in a beautiful spot of Kalambaka, having a magnificent view to Meteora, Theatro Hotel is a really cute place to be. Inspired by legendary movies, each room is nicely decorated and personalized, that makes it even cuter. Breakfast is rich and changes every day with many local delights. The beautiful mountains area with the monasteries is only 5 minutes driving. Strongly recommended.
The staff were welcoming and very customer-focused. The room was clean and we had a great view of the Meteora rock formations as well as one of the monasteries. The garden area was quiet and offered a great place to have a beverage and play Tavli. The breakfast was expansive and included items from their garden. Parking was convenient and the hotel was close to many bars and restaurants.
The hotel is amazing and located really nearby the rocks of Meteora and the Main Street of the village and has all the amenities you’ll need. Dita and Spyros who runs the hotel was very welcoming and helpful giving excellent service. If you look for a perfect getaway exploring the Meteora rocks and the surroundings, this is the place to stay at! Just look at the stunning view from the hotel!
This is not a typical hotel but more like a bed and breakfast. The owners were very kind, accommodating and helpful. The buffet breakfast included local foods, fresh eggs, fruit, yogurt, cappuccino and much more. The views are amazing - the city on one side and Meteora landscape on the other. My family and I really enjoyed our stay and appreciated the peaceful environment.
Nice, clean and modern property in Meteora, a quick drive to the sights and the shops. We loved everything about the hotel - very spacious and well decorated rooms, well done breakfast with coffee options, friendly staff and it is a much much nicer place than anything you will find around the central Kalambaka area so we didn’t mind the quick 3-5 min drive to Mirabilis.
The room was very spacious and the view of Meteora was fantastic. The furniture was comfortable and there were plenty of plugs for charging devices. The breakfast was very good. We also had all of our dinners there and the food was excellent. It was a short drive from the hotel to the monasteries and there was plenty of onsite parking. Great value for the money.
The room was not so big, but it was comfortable. The bathroom had a window, which I find always good, and my room had a big terrace. Kastrakis is a wonderful town, there are many restaurants just close to the hotel and Meteora is a couple of kilometers distant. Everything you will see around here is wonderful! I have enjoyed it a lot, thank you!
The hotel room is small, but very cozy and with a good view of the mountains. Everything is nearby, the best restaurant, shops, and a tour desk, where we booked an excellent excursion (30 Euros per person) “Watching the sunset at Meteora.” This is an unforgettable place. as if we had visited another planet.
The property is absolutely stunning. It is very new, modern, clean, and just over the top. You are given a code to access the room ahead of time so entry is very easy. On this trip my wife and I have stayed in 19 hotels between Spain, Greece, and Albania, and this property was by far the best.
Only an 8 minute walk from the train station. Easy 5 minutes to centre of Kalambaka. Great view. Receptionist was so accommodating in switching our room when we didnt have the bed selection we had booked. Quick to respond for recommendations for tavernas. All around fantastic hotel
Such a beautiful hotel, located in an idyllic location with stunning views of the Meteora mountains. The breakfast was delicious and the outdoor patio area was the perfect place to enjoy it. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Overall, it is one of our better stays in Greece.
The location, view, earthy decor, friendly staff and super comfortable beds. Oikia was the best hotel we have stayed in during our four week vacation in Greece. Early morning hike to Varlaam monastery was amazing!!!
Thank you for the travel tips and complimentary cappuccinos:)
What a wonderful little hotel to stay to visit Meteora right in the town if Kalabaka and close to restaurants etc. Room was nice and clean and has beautiful bathroom. The host was so wonderful and assisted us with directions etc and provided excellent breakfast. Thank you
View was spectacular!!!
Nikos (night shift at reception desk) was absolutely delightful, kind and super helpful and knowledgeable. As a matter of fact, we will plan another trip to Meteora, and have already decided that we would stay at this hotel.
