DIY the caves yourself: All the of popular caves close to town are DIY posible. Rent a motorbike to do the road loop to Paradise and The Dark Cave. Phong Nha Cave....just walk to the main boat area and pay for your own boat and ticket to see the cave. At the Dark Cave they give you a guide for your entrance fee. Paradise is just a simple drive up to it, pay 275,000d and walk though it. With the tours you'd not get enough time to really enjoy them I think.

The Phong Nha Cave trip by boat was amazing, and a highlight of our 4 and a half weeks in Vietnam. We could've also included a 7km walk in the cave but were not sure how difficult that would be (climbing etc). This cave needs to be one of the wonders of the world, it is that good! If we were coming here again, we would have chosen a cooler time of the year. We endured temperatures in the high 30s which was debilitating. I would be much more careful in choosing our accommodation too as our home stay accommodation consisted of a shipping container, very basically modified and far below a reasonable standard that domestic and overseas tourists should be able to expect.Ken - 10Scored 10

Phong Nha is an absolute must stop on a tour of Vietnam. So many people have never heard of it, but it's fantastic. Yes, we loved the caves but we loved the scenery, the fun at Dark Cave, the relaxed vibe. 4 nights was perfect for us as we had a 3 week trip limit and other places to see, but if I wasn't on that restriction I'd stay longer.

The cave is simply breathtaking and very easy to access.
The cave is simply breathtaking and very easy to access. We went there by ourselves. You don't really need a tour for this cave. We rode there by bicycle, got our tickets and our own boat ticket (you can share the boat with other visitors). The whole process is simple and straightforward. The ride on the boat is very nice and relaxing. The cave is not that big, but beyond beautiful. We've been to many caves in the world, and this is one of our favorites'. There is guide for extra charge if you would like to know more about the cave. He or she will ride with you on the boat. There is a 4.5KM tour for those who wants to see more of the wet cave. You will need to be good at kayaking. Paddling against the current is not an easy task, and navigating your kayak between all the tourist boats is simple challenging. However the reward is well worth it.

Fantastic limestone caves. Paradise Cave has to seen. Great fun also to be had in the dark cave playing in the mud and on the ziplines before and after and a Jungle Trek is a great (tough and very sweaty) and interesting experienceMarkUnited Kingdom - 10Scored 10

The town from where the tours to the surrounding caves start. It is full of accommodation and restaurants, and is still being built. The locals are kind only when they have something to gain, because the competition in the field of local tourism is high. I recommend Phong Nha only for trips to the caves in the area.
