Located on the north bank of the Rio de la Plata, the city of Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital, largest city and main harbor and economic hub. Claimed by the Spanish, Portuguese and British, the city now reflects the typical South American cultural patchwork. With a strong Italian and Spanish legacy, its soul dances to the rhythm of tango and the African-influenced "candombe."
With approximately 1.5 million people, it houses almost half of the country’s population. Montevideo has a rich cultural life with important institutions like the Solis Theater.
Carnival is Montevideo's most significant celebration, and the "murgas" play and dance "candombe" in the streets, turning the city into a big party. If you plan to book a hotel in Montevideo for carnival, check the availability beforehand!
Don’t miss the "Ciudad Vieja" old town, Independence Square and the views from the top of the Salvo Building. Rodo Park is the most traditional park in the city, while the "Rambla" esplanade offers 8 miles of sandy beaches.
Whether you prefer a cozy B&B in the historic district, a hotel on the beach, or accommodations near Carrasco International Airport, check out the Montevideo deals available on Booking.com!

Didn't have too much of a chance to see the city as it rained for much of the time. Liked the Mercado Agricole very much though. And noticed that there are nice beaches, though the water in the mouth of the Parana was quite muddy. Seems a friendly place.

I found it full of trash, graffiti, and the people not as friendly as hoped for. I arrived on their independence day so almost everything was closed on the Friday. on the Saturday some museums were closed for the weekend. I saw the on off bus said sold out. I thought the colonial express ferry to Buenos Aires was from the port, but it was from the bus station which went to the city/town of colonial 2 hours away. I found most things to be double or triple the price of Buenos Aires. I was able to find a pretty good hotel for $50 so that wasn't too expensive. I think more worthwhile as a transition place rather than a vacation place. Punta del Este or Colonia are more worthwhile to visit. But Colonia probable only needs one or 2 days.

Montevideo was much better than I had expected after visiting Buenos Aires. I like the streets of the old town, and they lead to water and have nice buildings. The city town is pleasant enough. I think spending two days in Montevideo is plenty. If you have time, you should visit Punta del Este and stay there for a couple of days.

1st visit to Montevideo last year: the best feature for us...
1st visit to Montevideo last year: the best feature for us was the rambla, amazing space for walking by the riverside for miles, and the fantastic bookshops. Best food was at the mercado del puerto in the old town. Easy to walk most places in the city
2nd visit: avoided the capital city, stayed on the edge of Carrasco (Hampton Hilton hotel) for the super-easy access to the Interbalnearia route to drive up the east coast. Carrasco is nice beachside town, but the shops are all a bit too posh!
Very clean rooms, good bathrooms, great value for money. The location is right in the middle of the old city of Montevideo. This puts you right in the middle of major tourist attractions, but bear in mind that there isn't a huge selection of places to eat and drink nearby at night (you'll be fine for lunch). This is more of a quirk of Montevideo than a quirk of the hotel - other neighbourhoods might have more nightlife, but less to do during the day.
There's a shared lounge bit with free coffee, which is really handy.
We enjoyed everything about this moderately-priced hotel. Warm, welcoming, helpful staff. Big windows that opened and sealed out noise well. Quiet street. Our triple-bed room had a quasi-kitchenette in a closet (no stove, but the rest). A welcome drink in the eating area. Good breakfast. Short walks, either to the shore park area, or to busses to other areas. Some eateries and restaurants in the area, in addition to the routine eateries in the large mall down the street.
Excellent hostel, run by friendly and relaxed (well, your typical Uruguayan!) Walter. Facilities are nice and clean, and there's a great terrace on the rooftop. Kitchen was well-equipped and pleasant to use. I liked the nice metal lockers to keep my valuables. It's reasonably close to the bus station to walk from there if you have a backpack, if not plenty of buses run down the nearby avenues. Good value for money.
The hotel is excellent! Very well located, 100 meters from Poncitos beach, with restaurants, shops, currency exchange, and markets within walking distance. The room is very big, comfortable. Excellent bathroom with new towels and bedding. Breakfast is amazing, lots of variety. The staff is very polite. We stayed twice at this hotel on our trip to Uruguay, and we will certainly stay again in the next one.
A great hotel near Main Street, but absolutely nothing to do in Montevideo… we thought we’d go across in ferry to Montevideo from Buenes Aires… stayed here 3 days but dead streets and no tourism. Hotel staff are super, breakfast was ok - only down side was single bed sized… they were like only 2.5 foot wide and not big enough for us 6 footers… otherwise all good…
Everything went as expected. The location is fantastic (close to the rambla) and many restaurants are nearby. The reception is very polite and clear. The hotel seems clean. My only comment is that the pillows were really hard, almost as rocks. Maybe it's great if you are keen to rocky pillows but not for us...
We spent six nights here for our first visit to Uruguay and were completely happy with everything. The staff was incredibly friendly. The hotel is well located and we walked almost everywhere. WiFi was good, which was very important to us. I would absolutely stay here again.
Food was very good. Restaurant was booked out a couple times and could not get in (makes no sense for hotel guests). some prices were very high for drinks, etc. Hotel property is older but fabulous. Gym is the best I've ever seen in a hotel. Equipment first class.
The king-sized beds were quite nice. The hotel is located in Punta Carenas, a neighborhood with many options of restaurants. It was easy to access the Montevideo's rambla (seaside / riverside avenue).
The hotel is excellent. Very comfortable and well appointed. The honor local liquor bar (just did small sampling) was a nice touch. I liked being in Ciudad viejo although it may not be for everyone.
Boutique hotel in a nice location (1 block to Pocitos beach), with comfortable and clean rooms. Modern facilities, very kind service. The best value for money in Montevideo!
Everything was really fine. Excellent shower. Excellent mattress. Excellent location (many bus lines in front of the hotel!). Excellent restaurants at a short walk.
The breakfast included was very handy and not offered at lots of hotels and I highly appreciated that. The location was also perfect for our traveling needs
The loft apartment is in a great location in the centre of the old city. The apartment was very comfortable and clean and perfect for a stay Montevideo.
