This place was unlike any other I visited on Madeira. It is situated on a mountain ridge in a small, quiet, remote village. Old, very dark wood everywhere inside the buildings with sparse lights gave me a feeling of an ancient colonial mansion. This was enhanced by the collection of unique artifacts on display everywhere. In the restaurant ancient bottles high above the bar were obviously deliberately covered in spiderweb. A wonderful kind of gothic experience! The lady host herself fitted perfectly in this movie with her grayish hair, dark clothes and warm smile. As a contrast to all the dark colours the breakfast room has the most astonishing bright view with two long walls completely covered with windows. Breakfast here as the sun rised behind the mountain peaks was truly memorable. Speaking of views my room also had an absolutely great view down the valey and the distant ocean, (although I don't think all rooms had a similar view).
