The Colca Canyon was worth the visit,not just for the condors. Plan a walk in the park. If you are interested in hot springs, go directly to the modern structure 5 kilometers from the town center. If you like to see the stars, plan a visit to the planetarium.

Chivay is small but doesn't over-promise.
Chivay is small but doesn't over-promise. It's a great start-point for tours, trips, walks and the rest. The local facilities - thermal baths, bars, restaurants etc - are pretty good and it's close enough to other places (Yanque, Corporaque et al) to walk or bus to get some variety - for example, the thermal baths at Colca Lodge were excellent (but don't believe Lonely Planet - they're not in Corporaque, it's another 5km down the road which comes as a surprise if you choose to walk). Highlight would be the planetarium which was great - very low-key but they were helpful and brought things to life, setting up their telescopes to all sorts of constellations or planets.

Very unpleasant experience. We ended up in a hotel without kitchen facilities instead. The hostel was over booked we guess. While we needed a kitchen to prepare ourselves for hiking the next day. The restaurant is very good, and the property is a wonderful place for bird-watching. 50 minute drive to Mirador Cruz de los Condores so you can grab and early breakfast and get an early start. Highly recommended. I wish we had been able to stay longer.
