The Colca Canyon was worth the visit,not just for the condors. Plan a walk in the park. If you are interested in hot springs, go directly to the modern structure 5 kilometers from the town center. If you like to see the stars, plan a visit to the planetarium.

Chivay is small but doesn't over-promise.
Chivay is small but doesn't over-promise. It's a great start-point for tours, trips, walks and the rest. The local facilities - thermal baths, bars, restaurants etc - are pretty good and it's close enough to other places (Yanque, Corporaque et al) to walk or bus to get some variety - for example, the thermal baths at Colca Lodge were excellent (but don't believe Lonely Planet - they're not in Corporaque, it's another 5km down the road which comes as a surprise if you choose to walk). Highlight would be the planetarium which was great - very low-key but they were helpful and brought things to life, setting up their telescopes to all sorts of constellations or planets.

Very unpleasant experience. We ended up in a hotel without kitchen facilities instead. The hostel was over booked we guess. While we needed a kitchen to prepare ourselves for hiking the next day. The absolute best part though was Lizbeth, who greeted us on reception, went out of her way to help us arrange a private taxi tour to see the condors at Colca Canyon, made us an early breakfast before we left and stored our bags for us while we were gone! She was brilliant and is a credit to the hotel.

The waterfall behind the hotel provides a lovely background of flowing water and the view through the canyon is just stunning. I was unfortunately very sick during our stay, but could see that the staff were genuinely concerned for my well-being and did everything they could to ensure I had what I needed and was comfortable.
