The North Otago (base in Oamaru) area is a hidden gem. Penguins, seals, steam punk, cheese factory, crayfish and blue cod at Moeraki, historic sites. And good restaurants in Oamaru and the area (Whitestone Diner -- as long as you like cheese, Fat Sally's, Fishwife, Moeraki Tavern, Hampden Fish shop and others).
We go back regularly and the area rarely disappoints. To enjoy fully you need a car.

It's a really cool town, the victorian precinct is amazing and you can spend hours just walking and admiring the buildings. There's a farmers market on Sundays and a lovely train that departs from the front to Steampunk museum to the penguin colony. It's a short but beautiful ride.
There are sea lions and seals everywhere and it's guaranteed you'll take nice pictures from them 😉

The penguin sanctuary was lovely and we saw penguins during the day in the nests. The evening tour was fully booked so get in early if you want to do that.. The steam punk museum was suitably odd and they were very friendly when we got caught in a downpour and stayed sheltering there while they were closing. Plenty of chance to see seals basking on the foreshore.
The victorian precinct however was just a street - possibly more exciting if you are from New Zealand of Australia but we live in a property older than anything on the street so not really that exciting if you are from the UK or the older cities in the US

A very pleasant surprise, was recommended to stop here by a friend, so glad we did. A quirky place , so much history. The Victorian quarter alone was wonderful. Steampunk also worth a look. Easy to walk around the town too. Ps some hilly streets 😀
Marshall is a charming and personable manager.
The ambience is friendly and welcoming.
The kitchen is well equipped and cleaned morning and evening.
The bathrooms are kept very clean and there is always hot water in the showers.
The location is absolutely central, so convenient for all attractions yet very quiet.
We greatly appreciate the fact that The Empire Hotel is still providing quality accommodation as it did when it was first opened. It continues to be part of Oamaru’s history.
We were delighted when we stepped into the room. It was very, very nice. Everything was well maintained and very clean. The beds were comfortable. There were 3 extra pillows, extra blanket, iron and ironing board, lots of hangers, hair dryer and the kitchen was well stocked with plates, cups, pans etc. There was a lot of room for our family of 4 adults. The motel staff / owner was very friendly and very accommodating. We would definitely stay there again the next time we are in Oamaru.
Rosie is a most accommodating Host. Always on hand with advice on what to do or where to go in Oamaru. Rosie will let you know if you have left anything behind, giving you plenty of time to arrange a Pick Up and....Rosie will always say Hello if she sees you out and about in the area ....sometimes months after your Booking - that is excellent Customer Care ! Rosie's place is my Go To Accommodation when I am in Oamaru.
This accommodation was luxury extraordinaire. We felt spoilt and our room was massive with all the amenities provided we couldn't have ask for more. The breakfast had a lot of choices and was laid out like a 5 star hotel. The hosts David & Liz were warm, friendly, attentive and it's obvious they really enjoy people's company. Liz even turned down our bed and put the heater on whilst we watched the penguins.
This hotel is beautiful! The steampunk esthetic was both glamorous and highly creative. The two women we dealt with could not have been nicer and our ski themed room was huge and comfortable. It had a living area with a huge TV and comfy leather sofa. The bedroom also had a TV. The town is so much fun who has time for TV! Breakfast was amazing as well - plenty to choose from in a lovely huge room.
This was such a fantastic place to stay in Oamaru. The location could not have been better — right in the middle of Old Town, but tucked off the street which meant there was no noise. The place was wonderfully decorated and had everything you could need, and the fire was a nice touch. Highly recommend.
interesting and unusual hotel - attention to detail was impressive- overall feel was one of luxury. The attention to detail in the room was really good and we felt welcome from the moment we turned up. Breakfast was a casual affair but we’ll set out and good continental choices.
Excellent service, we had late check in and they accommodated for that. Staff were absolutely amazing. Facilities cleaned daily, cleanest motel i’ve ever been in. Lovely room with a great layout. Will recommend to anyone staying in Oamaru! Thanks for having us
Roger our host was very attentive, helpful and pleasant. The view from our room was wonderful. A continental breakfast included was a treat. Reminded us of an English B & B in the old days. Quirky and charmingly old fashioned. Fabulous views over Oamaru.
Such a lovely tucked away peaceful cottage that was well equipped with a retro vibe. Fabulous view of Oamaru old buildings and seafront - very near penguin viewing - both at the wharf and the DOC cliff top site.
The unit we had was spotless to a very high standard and the location in Oamaru is very handy to all amenities it has always been our first choice for accommodation as we have now stayed there on four occasions.
The staff was excellent and very helpful and receptive to our needs. They went above and beyond what of hotel staff. The room near and clean and the bathroom had been recently updated.
The Manager of the motel!
Very friendly and courteous and very helpful.
The room was above expectations and at a very competitive rate, we both really enjoyed our stay here
