I like Whakatane area it has some great shop's, but when were in the Bay of Plenty we spend most of our time in beautiful Matata and Kawerau visiting with whanau. The beaches in Matata are truly beautiful, Matata is another great place to visit it's 20mins out of Whakatane great for fishing.

Whakatane is great for walkers with plenty of paths and toilets. Its family friendly and very clean. Pedestrian crossings seem to be missing but the locals were great and stopped at all the courtesy stops. We found some great places to eat and notes the town had more than everything you would need. Impressive little place for a short stay.

Whakatane has a huge variety of shopping stores, eating facilities, bars, hairdressers in fact everything really and for everyone. The Hub which is just across the bridge is another shopping area with Kmart and Briscoe being my favourites but again shopping for everyone. Bunnings the huge warehouse is a goldmine easy to get carried away when shopping there. The walkway/cycling lane along the waterfront is an awesome stroll. Accomodation....heaps to choose from....you have to visit to appreciate Whakatane.

We loved Whakatane.
We loved Whakatane. Wandering around the shops or along the river was lovely. We enjoyed watching the boats and everyone was very friendly. Over the hill at Ohope Beach was brilliant for sea swimming.
Didn’t notice there was a spa bath in the room which was a plus. Enough towels which most facilities don’t provide!
Tv’s in all the rooms was also unexpected & a nice surprise.
We had shown up earlier than expected check in time which the staff were happy to accomodate an earlier check in and fast tracked the cleaning of our room.
Beds were like sleeping on a cloud! Super comfortable which isn’t always the case sometimes at hotels.
It was good for the price. Had'nt been to Whakatane before. So chose central. The check in lady rang me three times, (We came from Wellington)...to confirm our booking. Rang me in Taupo... said I was on the way... rang again 20 mins away from Hotel, She was very persistent (it was only 6pm) seemed she wanted to leave and was waiting for us, unfriendly to say the least, no smile or enjoy your stay.
We appreciated our stay at the Cortez. It accommodated our family. We near had the entire complex to ourselves as we had booked in advance, this could've been a nightmare for hotel owners, however, they were so relaxed and accommodating that we chose to spend most of our time at the motel. We will definitely be booking with them again.
Lovely clean rooms, bed linen clean and crisp. Comfy bed. All the amenities of home. Older model motel, but still loved it. Having an indoor pool was a bonus. Nice friendly staff. Even though on the main road into Whakatane, it was still quiet, couldn't hear traffic noise. Definitely would come back here.
Location was perfect. Lovely little cafe on site. Staff lovely and friendly. Loved our room. Other family stayed at hotel as well. Fun comparing rooms. Only drawback, sons room, bottom floor, at base of stairs, no view, was disappointing. I suggested we swap rooms, but he said no, they aready settled in.
Host was welcoming when we arrived. We have stayed at this hotel before and my husband and I loved it. It was spacious and clean and well presented. I would highly recommend this hotel it's one of the best I have stayed in.
Cleanliness amazing, smelt super fresh and clean. So thoughtful even down to small squeeze bottle of cooking oil. We had 3 nights away in different motels , this was the best of the best.
Every thing cleaned everyday
.windows so well by very obliging staff. When motels say they have cable tv they need to have.more than1
This motel backs up their advertising. Well done.
Great little unit, plenty of space and very cozy with air con and couch and dining table, two double beds, very nice, I would highly recommend this place if you are coming to Whakatane.
The hosts were exceptional and very accommodating. Accomodation and room size etc really exceeded our expectations. Would travel to Whakatane just to stay here again!
The decor is beautiful, the location superb for dining out or going for a drink and the history of the hotel was a bonus. Also, very nice staff - super helpful.
