Interesting location on the top floor of a mall. The staff was friendly. The common area is really nice with all kinds of ammenities like tables to dine at, microwaves, water and coffee stations, desserts to buy, and a computer station with several computers at your disposal. The room itself is simple and clean. Somebody in another review commented the windows don't open, but ours did. We had fresh air whenever we wanted. Hotel was a pleasant 20min walk to Mastumoto Castle(must visit).

On average, 3-star hotels in Matsumoto cost $91 per night, and 4-star hotels in Matsumoto are $190 per night. If you're looking for something really special, a 5-star hotel in Matsumoto can be found for $419 per night, on average (based on Booking.com prices).
Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
Best bunk beds, matresses and (supersoft) bedsheets I've had during my entire stay in Japan. Very comfortable, large beds and the indoor air climate of the dorms is well controlled. Bathrooms are clean and common kitchen is well equipped. Location is perfect, close to main attractions and still only 15 mins walking from the train station (but Matsumoto is not that big anyway). The street is a pedestrian little shopping street, so very quiet at night as well. I loved my stay and would recommend this hostel to anyone going to Matsumoto.
+ Excellent location with the best views on the mountains and river. 5 minutes walk to the bus station. It is also very quiet as it is the last hotel in the row of hotels
+ very friendly and helpful staff. We were late arriving at the Akandana parking (warning GPS does not always work in the mountains) and missed the bus to Kamikochi. The staff arranged a taxi to pick us up very quickly.
+ Half Board included a 7 course dinner which was very nice
+ Breakfast buffet had the best Western options I have seen so far in Japan
The ryokan has an excellent shuttle service from Matsumoto station to the hotel. They also have a shuttle service to go to kamikochi, and they also offer a way back to Matsumoto. Súper useful and efficient. The amount of food is amazing and the quality was super good. They explained to us how to eat and deal with everything. Onsen hours are really long and great. The onsen is quite big and outside is amazing. The place is quiet with nice views.
Had a great stay here and truly enjoyed the whole Ryokan experience. Staff was extremely hospitable. Thee traditional room and futons were comfy (though the duvet was a bit warm). The onsen was perfect and the dinner an breakfast were truly Japanese and all very good. Even though there are some language barriers, they did their utmost best to explain things, where needed with help from a translation app.
We only spent two nights in Buena Vista hotel, but we can recommend the hotel to others. It is a clean central place to stay when you enjoy the fabulous city of Matsumoto.
The hotel reception can help you buy tickets for the castle, and you shouldn’t cheat yourself from experiencing that gorgeous site when you are there.
The employees are exceptional service minded and positive towards you.
This hotel looked a little too old for my liking, but I booked at the last minute and the price was good. The location is where this place shines though, because it's right across the street from Matsumoto station, and also in walking distance to Matsumoto castle.
Though the room was a little old, it was clean and the check in service was very easy and friendly.
Breakfast was amazing. A great mix of buffet Japanese and Western. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, it was a short walk to touristy Cat street where you can pick up some cute souvenirs and snacks, and we also walked a little further to Matsumoto Castle which was fantastic and well worth the effort. We chose to taxi to and from the train station (around $7 e/w)
The breakfast is notably good (some of the best croissants I've had in Japanese hotels). They also serve the regional speciality, Oyaki. The bathrooms are spacious and the shower pretty powerful. The pillows are thick, and they give you extra in each room as standard. The location is excellent, really close to both Matsumoto station and the castle.
We had an amazing time. The place is a small ryokan, with only 4 rooms so it very intimate and beautiful. It felt so authentic and truly Japanese. The shower and bath are clean and have hot water. Our room was nice and had ac, the futon was very comfortable. The food was great and most importantly the staff was kind and helped us with everything.
A lovely traditional onsen/ryokan in a town not far from Matsumoto City. The room and hotel was very clean and quiet, and it was only minutes away from the bus stop to Matsumoto City. There were hiking trails up the hill, and the onsen temperature was perfect for relaxing. The staff were very kind and caring.
The hotel's location is very good, a short walk from both the train and bus stations and not far from Matsumoto Castle and several museums. Service was friendly, and about as efficient as one would expect from a rather busy "business" hotel with its crowded breakfast area and check-in/check-out crush.
A traditional ryokan where the owners still hand make the soba noodles for dinner. Great private onsen, included in your stay and amazing food.
A bus from Matsumoto station runs frequently and stops outside the property.
The staff were so considerate and helpful. A great stay overall!
Location is quite good, and they provide bus to matsumoto station. The rooms are clean and have a nice view. It looks like once it was a 4-star hotel.
The onsen is really good, with outdoor, indoor and even an option for private onsen.
The capsules were very comfy and I was able to sleep well. The hotel was very clean and modern. The location is also very convenient for accessing the train station. I will definitely stay here again on my next visit to Matsumoto!
The place was surrounded by spectacular mountain views. The food was very Japanese , delicious , beautifully prepared and more than enough for one person. we appreciated the pick up from and return trip to Matsumoto station .
This was our best stay in Japan! The location is super close to the station. Matsumoto is a cosy village. Staff was super friendly and this was our best onsen experience so far!
Clean and recent rooms. The hotel is at a walking distance to the station and sightseeing places of Matsumoto. I also had a very cheap price for the quality of the hotel.
