deluxe single woman room very spacious. Enough space for all kind of luggage, room had own locker and several charging possibilities. Bike rental was for free for set amount of time, however more than sufficient to explore the area. Great common area which can be used throughout the day with hot water, tea for free.

This is a wonderful property with exceptional staff. Wonderful amenities with sell of tickets to the castle and to Kamikochi, with free rides to the train station, although it is a very short walk. Our only complaint was that they do not have central air and we were very uncomfortable 🥵They gave us fans and with the window cracked at night, it became a little more bearable. I’m sure in the middle of winter the rooms are very comfortable as they do have heating. Not sure if they have central air that at some point in the year they switch to cooling, but this is 3rd week of April and during the day can get quite warm in Matsumoto.

Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
The common room is cozy and makes you fell comfortable eating or hanging there.
The kitchen is well equipped and you get free tea and coffee.
The host was super welcoming and he gives us plenty of recommendations of things to do in the city.
The Japanese style comfort room was nice, and the futons with huge blankets were very warm and comfortable.
There were multiple showers and toilet, and they were all very clean.
Finally, the location is perfect, just 3 minutes from the castle, and 15min from the train/bus station.
This was perfect for a one night stay. Public bath is smaller than photos (men public bath is the one with bigger outdoor bath, not women, FYI) but otherwise super clean since shoes off before entering the hotel. Breakfast was superb (but definitely catered to more traditional Japanese taste) and don't forget to enjoy the free night noodle soup they offer, in addition to the free ice cream and yakult :) Would definitely come back again especially with convenient 5 min walk from Matsumoto station.
the hotel is in a perfect location, 5 minutes walk from Matsumoto station with many connivence stores next to it. the reception was extremely kind, offering free drinks in happy hour every evening. the best part about the hotel is the bath house and amenities. a lot of free amenities and comfortable pajamas offered. and the bath house was so peaceful. next to the bath house your could find a free massage chair that is a great touch. comfortable stay with a spacious room and a luxurious bathtub.
location was perfect. right beside the matsumoto bus terminal. 2 hour bus ride from terminal to tokyo shinjuku station.
hotel was modern and clean. laundry and dryer (not so powerful so we had to hang dry for a night in the bedroom) at level 4.
big supermarket at the basement of the matsumoto bus terminal. will stay here again when we visit matsumoto.
staff was very helpful too. they lent us a wheelchair and trolley for a full day and it made our travel plans so much more convenient.
A cheap accommodation where you get what you pay for. A very basic room but it was clean which is the most important thing and perfectly fine to stay for a couple of nights. The hotel is in a very good location close to the castle and a 15 minute walk to the train station. If you are on a travelling holiday it is perfect because you are spending such little time in the room and get cheap but comfortable accommodation!
The Japanese breakfast buffet was simply exceptional. Many traditional dishes were served, & good quality ingredients were used. If we return to Matsumoto again, we may book this hotel again only to savour its great & good Japanese breakfast spread. The other feature that we like is the onsen - balanced lighting, quality shampoo & bathing wash, & most importantly, a clean place to shower & onsen in peace.
It’s right at the Matsumoto J R station and just 15-20’s minute walk to get to the Matsumoto castle. The room is quite good, with necessary equipments. Staffs are friendly and helpful. Tasty breakfast with big volume. They serve optional Japanese set meal or western style breakfast. Beef curry is good and you can eat as much as you like😄
They gave us extra clothes for the room. They were very comfortable! The beds were very relaxing as well! 😁 The Hotel has most likely the best vantage point for any trip. There is a Busstation on the other side of the street and matsumoto Castle is about 2 minutes walkingdistance away. The staff is very helpful and friendly.
First time staying at Toyoko Inn and it was great. Clear mission statement shown in hotel TV translated on point into the room. Comfortable, immaculate room at good reasonable value. Good breakfast provided. Stayed the one night, but would have happily stayed longer. Near the Matsumoto station, so easy to travel onwards.
Perfect location and value for money. It's a walk away from Matsumoto Station and if you need anything from Daiso or Maruzen, they are just conveniently on the floor below. The hotel owner was very kind as well. You can leave your luggage until 11pm on your check out day and they can even call a taxi if needed.
The hotel's location is very good, a short walk from both the train and bus stations and not far from Matsumoto Castle and several museums. Service was friendly, and about as efficient as one would expect from a rather busy "business" hotel with its crowded breakfast area and check-in/check-out crush.
The location of the hotel is near the train station. We liked the onsen and the hotel offered a traditional Japanese breakfast that was really good. We really loved being able to rent a bike for the day- FREE of charge. The staff were all very helpful and spoke English fairly well.
We stayed in a traditional Japanese room, which we all loved and was great for kids. Lovely onsen and breakfast in this beautiful hotel. Great staff and a fabulous location in the older part of town. We loved Matsumoto, was a gorgeous town!
Location is quite good, and they provide bus to matsumoto station. The rooms are clean and have a nice view. It looks like once it was a 4-star hotel.
The onsen is really good, with outdoor, indoor and even an option for private onsen.
Well located just 10 minutes from the train station and 20 minutes from Matsumoto Castle. Lovely western-style hotel with all the amenities (except no public baths). Excellent and friendly staff, good buffet breakfast in the cafe.
This hotel with friendly staff offers clean (bath)rooms, good beds and a tasty, extensive breakfast buffet. It's located close to Matsumoto train station and thus a good starting point to explore to region.
Very close to the railway station and the main bus stop, the hotel is conveniently located for stop over travelers. Main restaurant options close by and Matsumoto castle just 10-15 min walk away
Great location, next to Matsumoto station. Great view of the mountains from my fifth floor room. Restaurants within walking distance. One of the larger hotel rooms I’ve had in Japan. Hot shower.
Clean and recent rooms. The hotel is at a walking distance to the station and sightseeing places of Matsumoto. I also had a very cheap price for the quality of the hotel.
