Atagawa Prince Hotel, hotel in Higashiizu

Located in Higashiizu, 656 feet from Atagawa Hot Spring, Atagawa Prince Hotel is a 4-star ryokan in Higashiizu features views of the sea.

The spa was fantastic! Indoor / outdoor facilities. Sauna, several mineral pools, beautiful view. Get the breakfast! It was delicious and served in a quaint tatami mat, private room with a heater at our feet. Really beautiful and a highlight of our trip. The double room was huge and SO comfortable. Floor to ceiling windows with ocean view. You basically live in the robes and jackets and slippers in the hotel. There was a van waiting at the train station to bring us up to the hotel (at the top of the hill)...very convenient and we did not even know about it! Loved the whole experience of this Onsen hotel!

Atagawa Yamatokan, hotel in Higashiizu

Atagawa Yamatokan provides beachfront accommodations in Higashiizu. This ryokan provides free private parking and an elevator.

I like it here. The room boasts incredibly beautiful scenery, facing the vast ocean, which is quite breathtaking. The carefully prepared food is also plentiful; the portions are so generous that we couldn't finish them all. The hot springs are also extremely comfortable.

A very natural fishing village great for divers and fishermen. People very friendly and earthy. A fantastic place for the sunrise and sunset but no immediate beach area if you want to swim. A lack of restaurants but there is one convenience store and it's very easy to jump on a train and go to the next town.

There isn’t a lot to do in Atagawa onsen. 2 nights and one day was enough. We enjoyed the onsen hotel, ate in the hotel, visited the Banana Alligator park & a small shrine near the station. If you stayed for a longer time you could travel to Izu-Kogen when there is more to see. If you don’t have a car, the train times are limited so check before you go to avoid long waits in the train station.

The sandy beach and clean ocean are fantastic, as there are also lifeguards so its a nice place to sunbathe and swim. Sadly, Corona virus has had a devastating impact on a lot of the hotels and shops so there aren't many places open. However, the restaurants that are still operating were reasonably priced with great food at reasonable prices. It's easy to get around as it's only a small place. Its built on a steep slope so you can take taxis if you don't want to walk. The station is easily accessible so you can use this town as a base. Just be aware that you will need to pay in cash almost everywhere, so don't rely upon your credit cards. There is an ATM in the local Family Mart Convenience store about ten minute walk from the station.

    Higashiizu is small seaside town.

Higashiizu is small seaside town. A couple of nights there was just right, any more time and we would have run out of things to do. If the weather cooperates, you can spend time at the beach or climb the cliff to Sakurayama park for an ocean view. The alligator garden is surprisingly interesting and one can easily spend 2 hours there. Most hotels in the area offer onsens and I believe there are some not attached to hotels. I would definitely recommend having or renting a car so as to be able to visit some of the neighboring towns for some more dining and activity options.

The town where we stayed (Atagawa) is falling to pieces.

The town where we stayed (Atagawa) is falling to pieces. It would have been amazing in its hay day (80's/90's) but many of the hotels are falling apart if not closed up. We stayed at the Atagawan which was lovely and well maintained. Views of the ocean were beautiful. Not enough to do in the town, of even the next town (which we walked to). Expensive round trip to the end of the train line if you wanted to see the other towns (approx. $60 return for three of us). I would return to the Izu Peninsula again, but I would stay on the Western side next time.
