Bamberg is the epitome of everything Bavarian: half-timbered houses, medieval splendour and heavenly views. Due to its overwhelming beauty, it’s almost surreal to wander its cobbled streets and drink it all in.
Speaking of which, Bamberg has a surprising number of breweries and inns serving its signature Rauchbier. Most are dotted around the UNESCO World Heritage-listed, pedestrianised historic centre - once at the heart of the Holy Roman Empire. Emperor Henry II ordered construction of the 11th-century cathedral and is buried inside.
His empire’s prince-bishops had it good, and their former seats are scattered over the city. Their Old Palace courtyard has wooden balconies adorned with bright flowers. The New Residence is even grander, with opulent halls reflecting the rulers’ wealth. Michaelsberg Abbey – the bishops’ private monastery - is on one of Bamberg’s 7 hills, and on the highest is Altenburg Castle, another ruler’s abode.
The modern seat of power – the town hall – is the most incredible building of all. Spanning 2 bridges over the Regnitz River, it partly hangs above the fast-flowing water and is overlooked by the colourful Little Venice fishermen’s houses.
Booking.com’s Bamberg accommodation is as eclectic as the bishops’ residences, ranging from old town hotels to cheap apartments and guest houses near Maxplatz, home of the main Christmas market.
Bamberg is a nice compact town which can easily be walked...
Bamberg is a nice compact town which can easily be walked and all the people of Bamberg we encountered were friendly. It had been beautifully kept and so many interesting places to visit or just simply wander about the town and admire the town as a whole. We had an amazing lunch at Hotel Brudermühl just by chancing across it as we walked the town and the Glühwein was pretty good too.
Currently (Dec 2023) there is a lot of restoration and building works so a number of locations are not open or are partially open for visitors but there is still plenty to see and do. Domplatz with the Bamberg Cathedral and New Residence are definitely worth visiting - make sure you go into the rose garden for the view across Bamberg.
In warmer weather a walk up to St Michael’s should be done.
Best thing to do in Bamberg is to walk and just Criss-cross the streets and bridges so you can see the amazing Altes Rathaus in the middle of the river from all angles as well as all the wonderful little finds on your walk. Bamberg is also a little shopping-mecca so remember to put aside some euros to spend here.
Definitely allow 3 days for Bamberg if you want to see everything.

Bamberg was a great stop in between Berlin and Munich.
Bamberg was a great stop in between Berlin and Munich. The small-town vibes are great and the city is beautiful. There is a lot of shopping and food. The boat ride was enjoyable. This town is a perfect mix of enough to do, but smaller and easier to navigate than a big city.
We didn't particularly care for their 'Rauchbier' (smoked beer) although many like it. We had great street food (doener and bakery). There is also a good mix of bigger stores and cute small shops (Christmas stores, bookshops).

One of the most beautiful towns I have visited in Germany. Maybe not the most excited when it comes to nightlife but if you are looking for a fantastic location, old beautiful building, great food and beer in a very peaceful environment with your friends or family, Bamberg is the place.

So much to see and do in such a relatively small space.
So much to see and do in such a relatively small space. So many little quaint corners to discover. So much history, so many good views. The people of Bamberg are really friendly and a wonderful laid-back atmosphere prevails, it's like all the visitors are happy. Sounds crazy but the air there is so fresh and clean in comparison to the Rhine-Main area where I live. The riverside has interesting cafes, bars, restos. The parks are lovely, the bus travel easy. I would avoid the RED BUS hop-on hop-off next time round. It's a bit of a rip-off. The Bamberg 3day ticket is a worthwhile investment.

In our mission to travel around Germany, Bamberg did not...
In our mission to travel around Germany, Bamberg did not dissapointed. It was exceptionally beautiful. Me and my husband were not expecting for this city to be as beautiful as it is. It has a lot of culture, delicious food and beer. Also the people in restaurants were really friendly!
I would definitely recommend for people to visit Bamber, but consider that is a VERY touristy place, so arrange your trip with time.
Once there you will be able to walk to most locations
Amazing helpful staff, we have to really appreciate their thorough hotel&town briefing we have received upon arrival in english!!! (still uncommon in Germany). Great location, super tidy and clean rooms. Dont be affraid about parking, public garage s are just round the corner, everything walking distance. Loved breakfasts including amazing dining room design. And you will be staying in a place, where an aircraft history was written as a bonus :)
Staff at this hotel is lovely. Very friendly. Breakfast was good and they kept it stocked. The actual hotel is neat- unique and fun. The breakfast area has such character. We really liked it and enjoyed our stay. Good location as well! You do have to walk from area parking garages, but it was very helpful that hotel staff sends a message with the area garages and how far of a walk for each. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it!
Hotel owners were lovely and really friendly. Breakfast was fantastic. I also had dinner there for the two nights I was based in Bamberg. Dinner food was great and went down well with the Smokey beer, which Bamberg is famous for. Around 30 to 40 minute walk into Bamberg city centre but enjoyable walk which goes through park and follows the river.
Would definitely stay here again if I go back to Bamberg.
Location in the Altstadt can't be beat -- anything you want to do in downtown Bamberg is within walking distance, and it's really cool to exit the apartment directly into the pedestrian zone. Host was very responsive when I had a couple of questions. Probably an easier stay for people who aren't dragging children along, but my kids liked the property and were game for the necessary walking & climbing.
With the amazing breakfast spread and the heart dinner from the attached restaurant, this was in a perfect location. Lots of trails nearby and a quick bus to the heart of Bamberg. Meeting the family and learning about this business made it even more special. My highlight is getting tips on how to use the public transport and what to see.
Staff, breakfast the room and location 10/10 will be back next year, for us it was an annual Soul weekender, plus we stayed here in 2023 and came back for 2024 because we loved the hotel, I do say to friends Bamberg is well worth visiting, and would point them in the direction for this hotel, fresh omelettes are a must.
The location is beautiful and really quiet. The hotel is nicely decorated, not too modern and not too big and has a nice outdoor area for eating. The staff were helpful and spoke good English. Bamberg itself is stunning. There is a bus right to the door otherwise there are riverside walks to Altstadt
This is a wonderful small hotel close to the historic sites. The staff are attentive and friendly. The hotel is modern and clean yet the hotel is historic. The breakfast was particularly delicious with something for everyone. I highly recommend this hotel for people staying in Bamberg.
Had a 2 bedroom apartment on the higher floor - the amount of space was fabulous and the location of the property is perfectly central in old Bamberg. The colour changing lights and fixtures were an extra cool feature. Rooms also come with fans which is great for the hot summer days!
The hotel is really close to the Bamberg train station, just in a 2 minutes walk, this is the main advantage of the property. Room was clean and bed more or less comfortable. Snack and drink vending machines in lobby was a good idea. Stuff was very nice and helpful.
Bamberg is absolutely beautiful, hotel in quiet location, nice 10 minute walk into Bamberg, uphill walk back or there is a bus stop nearby that we used when carrying luggage. Friendly helpful staff, traditional hotel, would recommend, we didn’t have breakfast.
Everything went really well, except the price for the value. But that is not the hotel issue, rather my price expectations from a small town. Parking is located directly under the hotel and the location is perfect both for work and travel
The hotel was in a great location and was very clean. The staff was very friendly too. Overall, the location, service, and comfort was excellent and we'd recommend staying here when in Bamberg.
The room was clean and comfy. Breakfast was very good. We had a top-floor room so the skylights were pretty cool. Just a nice reliable stop on our trip through Germany.
Small quiet hotel in the altstadt of Bamberg. Very nice accommodations, room clean and quiet. Breakfast was very good. Front desk staff most accommodating and helpful.
