ALMA CHILOTA, hotel in Castro

Featuring a garden, terrace and views of sea, ALMA CHILOTA is located in Castro, 11 miles from Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Church.

Alma Chilota is an excellent boutique hotel in Castro, with the bonus of giving guests the experience of staying in a palafito. The staff were very welcoming, and always ready to answer questions or help provide recommendations. The room was spotless, and the linens were fresh, and clean, and smelled amazing. The bathroom was a little bit tight for my tall husband, but it was also clean and the water was hot with great pressure. Breakfast offerings were fairly extensive for such a small hotel, and included meat, cheese, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bread & toast, sweet cakes, and eggs cooked to order. Coffee was always hot and ready to go around the clock, and hot water and hot milk were also available for tea drinkers. Watching the sea lions and dolphins play in the fjord was also amazing. Several excellent dinner locations are located just a few steps away along the same road.

I'd been to Castro several times, but this was my first during high season, and I'd advise travelers that unless you like sitting in backed-up traffic ('taco') for long stretches, just avoid Castro from mid-January to late February, when trying to drive from anywhere north of Castro to anywhere south of Castro can take hours. November-December are great, however, and I'm told March is the best month of all. By and large, Chiloé's charms are not to be found in the cities.

Castro is a really charming and very laid back place despite being the largest town on the island of Chiloe. It's a wonderful place to chill out, and there is some beautiful countryside in the vicinity. Next time when I go back, I'd like to rent a bike and explore the countryside more leisurely (this time I had a car).

I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why!

I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why! Castro was charming, a nice mix of history and local culture. The municipal museum was informative, the UNESCO heritage churches were really interesting, the palafitos--houses on stilts along the waterfront--were very colorful. The weather can be quite variable--I had two sunny, nice days and three rainy cold ones--so travelers need to bring a variety of clothing choices. Well worth a visit!

The famous church is way better looking on the inside.

The famous church is way better looking on the inside. Not much going on in the town itself, but a pleasant stop on the way, or base for other day trips. Highly recommend Nórdica Cafe for empanadas and sandwiches!

This is a fantastic hotel, with a fantastic staff, especially Elena, who was a star!! The location is meh within Castro, but great within the island. Breakfast was AMAZING, and they had freshly made bread every morning, eggs and all sorts of delicacies. The views from all terraces in the hotel are great too. Kudos to the staff who made us dinner at 23h in the night because we arrived too late and too hungry. Excellent, outstanding service.

It is such a lovely colourful and alegre (cheerful!) place to stay. There is local artwork all over the rooms giving it such a unique vibe. The bedroom was lovely and the bed is probably the most comfortable one i’ve stayed in for months. It even had a heated blanket! The host Miguel is so lovely and gives lots of detailed plans of what to do in the area, with buses etc. He basically planned my whole time there for me which was so great!

The Lodge is in an incredible location. If you are a nature lover, this is the place for you! The lodge and park guides help to make the visit an adventure and a learning experience. Night hikes, boating to a remote hiking area, trails that are easily accessible were especially appreciated. The lodge is warm, comfortable, and welcoming. We would absolutely send friends and family to stay here. Not t be missed on a trip to Chiloe!

Beautiful spot, very quiet with beautiful view over the surrounding area. Comfortable cottage with enough space for 2. Good and fast communication with the owner via what's app, who gave a lot of information for the island. Owner met us at the highway, to show the way to the bungalow, which is a bit difficult to find if you don't know the way.

The location was excellent, nice ,cozy hotel, tastefully decorated. What I really want to recommend is Helena the receptionist. She was very very nice. After we checked out, they found documents in our room. Since we left Castro at the time, I asked her to photocopy them (quite a lot) and she did it and I thank her for that😊

Our host Andres was friendly and eager to share his vast knowledge of Chiloé. Every place he recommended was as he predicted it — like having a personal travel planner! I cannot thank him enough. … The cabin is in a lovely setting on the water’s edge, far enough off the highway out of town to provide a restful sleep.

It's a big old hotel: probably the first one of it's class in the city. The location is just great. It has wifi, sauna, indoor pool (all free), great breakfast, and great staff. They change our room so we could get a better view of the sea, they helped us with our bags and they were very attentive to any request.
