Grundarfjordur is a convenient town for exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It has a good grocery store and two excellent cafes for coffee & treats. A little food truck is open until the end of August. We stayed here 4 nights so we would have time to explore and I'm glad we did because one day was too stormy to see sights and another day wasn't optimal.

Destination port for cruise ships, correspondingly temporarily overcrowded. All pilgrimage to Kirkjufell (known from social media), which is accordingly overcrowded. Deterrent example of Icelandic mass tourism. :-(

Definitely not worth the extra drive time, town is not set up for tourists at all, hotel was 350 euros, which was very high compared to all other night on our trip. We spent the same, but had much better accommodations. Much more to do in the other towns

The town/village itself is really quite sweet. We didn't spend much time there, but we did drive in to use the grocery store and walk around a bit. Kirkjufell Mountain is really quite stunning and one of the most recognizable Icelandic landmarks. You can just sit and look at it all day.
For such a small town, Grundarfjordur is packed with loads of hotels, guesthouses, shops and places to eat. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

This small mountain gets a lot of positive press and yes, it's kind of cool but really not all that great. We were trying to find it the last time we were here (three years ago) and drove right past it. There is a parking lot on the left as you are leaving town and you need to park and get out for the mountain to "look" like it looks in the pictures you see everywhere- with the waterfalls, etc.
There are numerous sights around Iceland that make this one look like a joke. Still...stopping for 5 minutes to get a picture or two will be worth it but you won't look back on this one and remember how awesome it was.

A gorgeous setting next to Kirkjufell Mountain!
A gorgeous setting next to Kirkjufell Mountain! It is a very convenient base for exploring the Snaefellsness peninsula. Dont miss the wonderful restaurant, Bjargarsteinn Mathus, where our meal was truly exceptional.
Located on a remote road and overlooking the water, the Sudur-Bar Guesthouse is a comfortable place to stay in this part of Iceland. We had a room with a private bath and found it to be everything we needed. The bed was comfortable (though the pillows were mushy.) The bathroom was modern. The breakfast was good. The host was friendly and gracious. The WiFi was solid.
We enjoyed our stay and, returning to this part of Iceland at a later time, we would stay here again.
The atmosphere is amazing! You are looking at the Arrowhead Mountain from the Game of Thrones from your cabin! The private patio outside your own cabin is seriously an awesome place to have a meal with a great view! The cabin is comfortable and well appointed. Water pressure of the shower is awesome! It's one of our favorite places to stay, if not the top 1, of our 12 day Iceland trip.
Owner communicated well.
Quiet place to stay near Kirkjufell. Self check in and self service. There was a baby crib in our room as requested (free). They have free Netflix on the TV which is nice.
Breakfast is at a cafe around the corner. The selection of food isn't huge, but has all the standard things (bread, cold cut, veggies, cereal, milk, coffee, juice). They do have a baby high chair at the cafe.
A little treasure! This guesthouse is super comfy. The rooms are very nice and we really enjoyed our stay here. The bathrooms are super clean and modern. The kitchen has everything you need and the armchairs in the living room invite for a relaxing end of the day. This has been the nicest accomodation on our whole trip through Iceland!
Everything! Asthildur the owner is very friendly and helpful. The apartment is very cosy, well organized, well equipped and warm. Small attentions wait for your arrival. View is nice. House is well located downtown and in Snaefellsnes. The site is awesome. It was perfect. May be the best guesthouse we had in seven trips to Iceland.
Very convenient location, only about 10 minutes car drive from Kirkjufell, which made our stay in Dis Cottages even more lovely! Enjoying midnight sunsetting in a total quietness except for bird chirping is Must Have experience if you love peace in isolation. Also managers of the place are very welcoming and stay just nearby.
Probably the lowest price we have paid for during our Iceland trip. Yet, it was a great accommodation with great location and good level of cleanliness. Sufficient space too.
Great view of Kirkjufell as well and of other mountains
Everyone in the shared kitchen was very respectful and accommodating.
Nice location near Kirkjufell on a farm. The shared living area was nicely appointed, and the bathroom was large for Iceland. The owner communicated well to help us get checked in, although we didn't meet. The weather was wet and windy, so we didn't get a chance to walk around.
Beautiful location and great host, Valberg was very generous with his stories and information in response to our millions of questions about farming in Iceland. We too have sheep and horses so it was great to hear the about local Icelandic ways. Thanks from Helen and Warwick
Excellent location in Kirkjufell
The apartment is so well-maintained and comfortable
Kitchen is well-equipped for cooking
Host was so kind to alert us when the Northern lights was on and it was brilliant!
There are some very cute cafes nearby
Had a wonderful stay here!
One of the best places we have stayed in Iceland! The bed was very comfy, it had a full kitchen and private bathroom. Everything was very clean! The owners are very kind and are accommodating. Will stay here when we go back!
This was a perfect secluded location in the west of Iceland! The room was warm and spacious, had cooking facilities and a nice bathroom. It was a perfect cosy spot for a night, I would have happily stayed longer!
The most beautiful view we had in Iceland. So quiet and peaceful, Kirkjufell right opposite. A little piece of heaven. Very easy parking, clean and nice breakfast in the gazebo with breathtaking views.
Highly recommended stay at Iceland.
Room clean, parking easy n free, near Kirkjufell mountain and fall. We had experienced awesome sutset n Northern Light during our stayed
if I could give a 15 I would! wish we could stay a week instead of one night! but it was our last night in Iceland and we couldn’t have picked a more beautiful spot!
