Grundarfjordur is a convenient town for exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It has a good grocery store and two excellent cafes for coffee & treats. A little food truck is open until the end of August. We stayed here 4 nights so we would have time to explore and I'm glad we did because one day was too stormy to see sights and another day wasn't optimal.

Destination port for cruise ships, correspondingly temporarily overcrowded. All pilgrimage to Kirkjufell (known from social media), which is accordingly overcrowded. Deterrent example of Icelandic mass tourism. :-(

Definitely not worth the extra drive time, town is not set up for tourists at all, hotel was 350 euros, which was very high compared to all other night on our trip. We spent the same, but had much better accommodations. Much more to do in the other towns

The town/village itself is really quite sweet. We didn't spend much time there, but we did drive in to use the grocery store and walk around a bit. Kirkjufell Mountain is really quite stunning and one of the most recognizable Icelandic landmarks. You can just sit and look at it all day.
For such a small town, Grundarfjordur is packed with loads of hotels, guesthouses, shops and places to eat. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

This small mountain gets a lot of positive press and yes, it's kind of cool but really not all that great. We were trying to find it the last time we were here (three years ago) and drove right past it. There is a parking lot on the left as you are leaving town and you need to park and get out for the mountain to "look" like it looks in the pictures you see everywhere- with the waterfalls, etc.
There are numerous sights around Iceland that make this one look like a joke. Still...stopping for 5 minutes to get a picture or two will be worth it but you won't look back on this one and remember how awesome it was.

A gorgeous setting next to Kirkjufell Mountain!
A gorgeous setting next to Kirkjufell Mountain! It is a very convenient base for exploring the Snaefellsness peninsula. Dont miss the wonderful restaurant, Bjargarsteinn Mathus, where our meal was truly exceptional.
Fantastic position with views of Kirkjufell and a great big fully equipped kitchen for cooking in with crockery and utensils supplied. Our room was big and sunny and very clean. The free voucher for coffees at Valeria coffee roasters was the icing on the cake as this columbian owned cafe had the best coffee in Iceland! Super friendly and helpful hosts who helped us with information on road conditions ( which were treacherous when we visited early April).
The location is excellent. On a clear day or even rainy day you can look across the ocean to see the beautiful Kirkjufell peak. It’s located only 10 minutes out of town (Grundarfjordur) and right by a scenic golf course. We stayed in the duplex cottage which was clean, cozy and comfortable. The breakfast was wonderful as well. I would love to spend more time here but our travel plans are taking us elsewhere.
Excellent location, facility and layout of the property. One of our best stays in Iceland and worthwhile to visit again. Only 4 minutes from the Kirkjufellsfoss and has an exceptional view of Kirkjufell Mountain from the living area.
We were also fortunate to watch the aurora right on the patio! What an amazing combination of location, property and hospitality!
Highly recommended!
The location of the DIS Cottages is excellent. Perfect view of Kirkjufell, it was much closer than I expected. The room was clean and comfortable with huge floor to ceiling windows and a deck. I was in Iceland for 2 weeks and stayed in 5 different places, DIS was easily my favorite. Anne and Sebastien both stopped by to welcome us and make sure everything was OK. Highly recommended.
While it is called a Bed and Breakfast the breakfast is not included. You are able to purchase breakfast at a discounted rate. Also to check in you need to call the owner. This was difficult for us as we do not have that ability abroad. The apartment was in the process of being remodeled which was fine with us but may not be for others. Also the Wi-Fi was spotty at best.
That was the best apartment we were during our trip in Iceland.
The apartment is perfect for a family of 4 or 5 people.
The apartment is well equipped and decored, everything you may need is there.
The views from all the rooms to the Kirkjufell mountain are awesome.
The communication with the host and the check in/out process were smooth and easy.
The most delightful lodging of our entire 10 night stays in Iceland. And they have all been good. It's an adorable guesthouse with a spacious shared living area and kitchen. The bathroom provides ample space as well. Not so tight, like many places. I highly recommend staying at Eidi Farmhouse if you are staying on the Snæfellsjökull Peninsula.
Everything! Asthildur the owner is very friendly and helpful. The apartment is very cosy, well organized, well equipped and warm. Small attentions wait for your arrival. View is nice. House is well located downtown and in Snaefellsnes. The site is awesome. It was perfect. May be the best guesthouse we had in seven trips to Iceland.
Very convenient location, only about 10 minutes car drive from Kirkjufell, which made our stay in Dis Cottages even more lovely! Enjoying midnight sunsetting in a total quietness except for bird chirping is Must Have experience if you love peace in isolation. Also managers of the place are very welcoming and stay just nearby.
Beautiful location and great host, Valberg was very generous with his stories and information in response to our millions of questions about farming in Iceland. We too have sheep and horses so it was great to hear the about local Icelandic ways. Thanks from Helen and Warwick
Location, nicely decorated, the cleanliness, openness and spaciousness, the views, the kitchenette, separate bedroom space, nice living room, and the best value on our Iceland trip!! (We were in number 6.)
Guesthouse with two very well equipped kitchens, free laundry room, TV with Netflix, and a beautiful view on the Kirkjufell mountain! Definitely one of the best places we've stayed in Iceland!
Really confortable overall. The staff is super welcoming and works hard to maintain the place clean. My room was dark in the bright summer night of Iceland :) I had a great stay.
