We are about as central as it gets. Walking times:- Covent Garden Market 1 min Trafalgar Square 7 min Leicester Square 7 min Charing Cross station 6 min Coliseum 5 min Royal Opera House 3 min Vaudeville 1 min Adelphi 2 min Savoy 4 min Lyceum 4 min Aldwych 6 min Theatre Royal Dury Lane 4 min Theatre Royal Haymarket 11 min 10 Downing Street 15 min Buckingham Palace 27 min John Lewis Oxford Street 28 min St Pauls Cathedral 26 min British Museum 16 min The stage door of the Vaudeville is next door and the stage door of the Adelphi is 100 yards down Maiden Lane. We are above Moto sake bar. Maiden Lane is 150 yards of history packed with restaurants, cafes and bars on your doorstep. History notes: Maiden Lane ran inside the south wall of the original Covent Garden which was owned by Westminster Abbey before Henry VIII appropriated it. The front wall of our building is on the line of that ancient wall. Reputedly Maiden Lane was a cul de sac until Queen Victoria wanted to visit the Adelphi via the stage door to avoid the crowds. Voltaire lived next door almost opposite London’s oldest restaurant, Rules. Boyle of Boyles Law fame had his laboratory 2 doors away towards Southampton Street where Brad Stoker, author of Dracula and the manager of the Lyceum Theatre, rented his first London home. Going further back, after Londinium was sacked by Boadicea the town of Lundenwic grew up here, north of the Strand.
I started my business in Maiden Lane more recently, almost 30 years ago. Covent Garden is home now and whenever I am away I miss the relaxed pace of Covent Garden where the locals work at pace whilst visitors relax. This is where the phrase The Show Must Go On was termed. Everybody in the area is focused on their small part in the great show which plays every day in Covent Garden. For hundreds of years the most wonderful people have been drawn to this street from all walks of life. Nestled in Theatreland I won’t name the stars, playwrights and choreographers who I hosted here.
If there is an entertainment centre in London this is it. The area is called Theatre-land but it could equally be called Restaurant/Cafe/Pub-land. A short walk East takes you to the Law Courts 12 min and the City finance district. Walk South across the river and you are at the London Eye. Walk South West and you are at Parliament 18 min and Westminster Abbey 20 min or due West to see the Queen 25 min. Walk north to the British Museum 14 min.The area could as easily be dubbed Restaurant/Cafe/Pub-land. A brief 12 minute stroll takes you to the Law Courts. Further on you'll pass St Pauls 26min and you're in The City financial district. Head to the river and you're at the iconic London Eye 17 min or Parliament 18 mins with the historic Westminster Abbey across the road. Alternatively within 25 minutes you'll find yourself in the presence of royalty. If you prefer a cultural outing, a 14-minute walk could take you to the British Museum. Maiden Lane has been a part of London's landscape for centuries. Today, it is known for its vibrant atmosphere, lined with a variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs including the oldest restaurant in London, Rules. One of the notable features of Maiden Lane is its connection to the entertainment industry. Over the years, it has been home to several theaters and entertainment venues. The area around Maiden Lane is often bustling with street performers, artists, and musicians, adding to the lively ambiance of the street. Additionally, Maiden Lane is famous for its dining options. You can find a diverse range of restaurants and eateries offering various cuisines, making it a popular destination for food enthusiasts. Whether you're looking for fine dining, casual eateries, or international cuisine, Maiden Lane has something to offer for every palate.
